“You’re terrified, you’re terrified”

“Why he wasn’t down and out
Just punch drunk silly …
He’d say you better watch yourself in this big old city
‘Cause I know how you feel
You’re terrified, you’re terrified”
Circus Lupus

I have to tell you that CIRCUS LUPUS’ ‘Supergenius’ still is one of the best punk albums ever. It’s so breathtakingly disharmonic/harmonic and desperate and pissed off – awesome. I hadn’t listened to it in a while and now I can’t stop.

“I’m never going to die no”
Circus Lupus

Last Friday Seppo and me had a little birthday party and that was good. Thanks to everybody who added to that! Especially Jessie for the yummy food and Manfred and Simon for doing the bar and to Casioheart, Jool, Quirin and Tobi L for djing! I think it was already six in the morning when Tobi K, Kerstin and I dropped in a cab and I’m glad we got home safely as the driver was a bit psycho. The contrast between his sloppy pedestrian-wipe-off driving style and the pedantic accuracy of some exactly parallel pencil holders and some teddybear reflectors on his dashboard was a bit scary. Taxi drives theoretically are such a pleasant luxury thing but most of the times I took one I felt quite uncomfortable with drivers starting talks while I already feel like sleeping or they open your back window for a nice summer breeze and you get half blown out by the icy air rush and so on. I’m not made for that.

“The light readily on bright
As the dawn left our eyes”
Circus Lupus

The next day when we started having breakfast the sun was still shining but when we finished huge grey clouds wrapped the day up into a nasty affair you’d rather handle from within your bed. Being quite hungover I wasn’t really able to concentrate on anything useful that day and when Kerstin and Tobi had left I spent the day lazily watching videos and making Hamtaro masks for the Sophisticated Boom Boom party we had on Saturday and for which we turned the flyer slogan “Fake humans have more fun” into “Fake hamsters have more fun”. Of course the underlying message was “hamsters against fascism” but nobody needed to know that.

I took the tram to the city centre and got me a really bad falafel (avoid Quick Döner for that) and really good hot maronis. Then my dj mates arrived at the K4, one after the other and we started cutting and glueing the masks and knotting rubber band to it and I was so tired I couldn’t imagine spinning records longer than an hour or two. Club Mate, Premium Cola and lots of dancing people helped though, and it became one of the best Sophisticated Boom Boom nights in a while. Here are some pictures. Next one will be on the first of December.

It was pretty crowded and there were people from all ages, friends and strangers, and djing worked in a nice flow that night which isn’t always the case with if you dj ping pong style. We were only four (Stefan was in London): Tobi, Peter, René and me and from some point on it seemed we could play whatever we wanted and people enjoyed it and we left out hardly any genre but sticked long enough with each to give people a chance to get into the different moods. I loved it. It was exactly like what my idea of SBB is. We played punk and indie, disco and electronics, hiphop and reggae, some silly mainstream pop, some political and conscious tunes, and that all to open-minded people who danced on and on. Some of my fave songs/moments were: Peter playing a Young Gods tune and TSS’s “Macht kaputt was euch kaputt macht” and some song by The Fall that made people almost get into pogo, Rene playing that 8bit-tastic “Smalltown Girl” hit and New Order’s “Ceremony” and Einstuerzende Neubauten’s “Fuetter dein Ego”, Tobi playing a Reggae version of the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back”, some Bonde Do Role track and a Gossip/Soulwax remix, and two of my fave tracks of what I played were Headman’s “Moisture” remixed by Mustapha 3000 and Jarvis Cocker’s wonderful kitsch vs politics song “Cunts Are Still Running The World” of which you can see a lovely video clip with written lyrics here.
I’m really curious what Mr. Cocker’s upcoming album will be like.
Ha, reminds me: although it makes me cringe and it’s so bad it really should be deleted for good here‘s a link to a clip of William Shatner’s cover version of an old PULP classic, “Common People”. I warned you. It hurts. Joe Jackson is in it too.
For the weaker at heart here‘s also a link to the wonderful original.

“Boys don’t cry
That’s why they always get high”
Japanther

On Sunday me and Tobi L drove to Munich to see JAPANTHER and THE GOOD GOOD live at Kafe Kult. It turned out to be another wonderful evening. I hadn’t heard any music of THE GOOD GOOD and they were a pleasant surprise: experimental hippie postpunk with a noisy edge, played by two guys and one girl with such enthusiasm that it put quite a few smiles on my face. Flirting heavily with dilettantism while actually being able to play really good maybe best characterises what made both of those bands so charming. JAPANTHER’s noise punk made me think of a Harmony Korine KEN PARK 2006 version of what it must have been like to experience the Ramones’ music for the first time in some sweaty little venue. Pissed-off pseudo-naive lyrics, snotty harmonies, and a trashy trashy sound. Also you simply have to love a band that plays their chaotic samples from an old tapedeck and speaks along, knowing them by heart. Anti-cool is another term that they bring to my mind. JAPANTHER are just two guys, one playing drums (awesometasticly powerful and with his back to the audience), the other bass guitar and both of them sing using old telephone speakers. Here are two video links, I’m too lazy to find out how to ’embed’ them.

“Now I got a feeling slightly unrequited
She fixed her mind so steadfast and succinctly
Bodies that attract must continue absolutely”
Circus Lupus

Another punk show I’ve seen that week when I went to the K4 to care about our weekly beverages ordering was SS KALIERT and THE ACTION of which I only enjoyed the latter. SS KALIERT were a bit too average. Nice mohawks and all but a bit too oompa oompa whereas THE ACTION really got energy. Can’t say much about them but that they come from Canada and rock seriously.

Yesterday I made the mistake of sitting in the beergarden at the Post City Of Subculture meeting for too long and maybe it’s because that’s not such a good thing to do in October or it’s because of some leftover germs of the evil Paluka flu, I’m not sure, but anyway I woke up with my cold No. 17 this year. Maybe it’s even my 18th. Feels like my 100th. I’m sooooo sick of being so stupidly susceptible to that shit.

No new music from me this week but next Monday there will be a new EVE MASSACRE song released on the FEEDBACK AND DISASTER online compilation.
It’s called “Fuel”.
As that clearly is too simple a title for an eve massacre song I added ‘Done With Dichotomies vs Fun With Dichotomies’ to the title.
In brackets.
More of that on Monday.

Cough cough straight from the heart,
yours truly,
evee ms.
