The Pixeltan: Get up e.p. on DFA

This e.p. is an irresistable little arty funk jewel. Consisting of Hisham Bharoocha, Devin Flynn and Mika Yoneta they combine the rough disco dub sound (maybe re-started a couple of years ago by dub narcotic ss and the likes) with the typical no wave drive of DFA and sexy funky vocals with tons of delay.

On this site you can listen to snippets of all the songs, and ignore that ‘out of stock’ comment: try X-Mist Mailorder to lay your hands on this one.

Not new but I just came across this cute little video to the TISM song “Everyone else has had more sex than me”:

Watch it streamed from this site or download the file.

The wave of death disco is still flushing some nice bands to the shore, one of them is TURN PALE. They got what every cool – or should I spell it ‘khol’? – band needs: simplistic disco beat drums, funky straightforward bass lines, a singer who sounds like a more hysteric Robert Smith, like The Rapture… you get the idea. There’s a good 7″ out on Ruffian Records (“Films we like”, “Weapons training”).

On their website you can get some songs from their album that was released last year, sounding a little bit rougher:

“Sycophant” mp3

“Light Melts Away” mp3

tourdiary day #01

04nov’04 ::: Bonn @ Bla ::: with TIGER LOU

Fuck mobiles. On our drive there, stuck on a dark foggy motorway, I received an SMS about a friend of mine, saying “She will die, we should make our farewells.” That swept me off my feet. When we arrived at the venue there were already lots of people waiting, eager to see TIGER LOU whom we were to support. We had to hurry with our soundcheck and I was more than confused on that night. Maybe we shouldn’t have played cause I felt like hiding and not like being exposed to other people’s looks, and I feel sorry cause we didn’t play good that night. I remember Cris screaming a lot and that we didn’t hear all of the beat backing of our music which made it hard to play. For a moment I had hoped that playing and singing could be an outlet but it didn’t work for me on that night.

After our show I rushed outside and phoned home and was told that Tine was already braindead and that all that was left was to wait for her physical presence to die. I felt helpless and angry and vulnerable. It was such an absurd situation being caught in that crowded club or standing in front of it in the cold, crying and not really caring to hide the pain. I tried to get drunk but it didn’t really work. Thanks to Dennis who really consoled me (and did his best to get me drunk 😉 ), and thanks to Martin for putting us up, and Fatzo for hospitality. The Beckett postcard on his fridge the next morning became something like my tour mantra: “When you’re up to your neck in shit, the only thing to do is sing.”

Hello, I’m back from the wonderful little Unmono & Eve Massacre tour and I loved it. Travelling with Cris was great – thanks for being such a great companion, mate! 🙂

I enjoyed it that the people who put up the shows got us playing with really different kinds of other artists.

Also it was good to meet friends I hadn’t seen in a while.

I would like to thank everyone involved in putting up a show for Unmono and me!

Some tour diary style impressions will be up next.

My album is out now. It’s called “Gestures Of Indifference” and there’ll be an extra section for it soon. For now you can order it from me directly or from or get it in Nürnberg from Mono-Ton record store where I will also play a little ‘unplugged’ cd-release show in december.

More news soon.

Oh, and of course I have another music recommendation too: Go check AGENT LOVELETTE’s website and download every mix on there. I love his “Laura & his boys have a party”, especially for the sexy Cure-vs-Scissor-Sisters part (could be longer, dear!), but it’s been a while since he made any mix that didn’t please me. Great stuff.

I’ll also recommend some more bastard pop stuff soon on our SOPHISTICATED BOOM BOOM blog.

Tomorrow we’ll have our next SOPHISTICATED BOOM BOOM party at K4 (Königstr.93/Nürnberg/just across the street from the central station).

This time we have some great live guests: NEOANGIN (= Jim Avignon) + NOVA HUTA.

Jim Avignon, so called ‘Andy Warhol of Berlin’, already had a remarkable career as painter backing him up when he decided back in 1997 that he also wanted to start his pop riot in music as a one man band. Since then he has released a lot of CDs using the name NEOANGIN.

Some songs:

“friendly dog in an unfriendly world” mp3

“faq” mp3

“soft rebel” mp3

NOVA HUTA combines very danceable Fake Gay Disco with eastern european love for melodies and an irresistable hip swing – dancing like a young Jarvis Cocker he also manages to bring fun back into electronic music shows.

Listen to one of his songs here:

“bambij robot” mp3

They both got to know each other in 1998 and decided to make electronic live shows beyond boring laptop gazing – they wanted weird and wild shows with dancing and a Dadaistic stage design and a cartoon landscape. By now their analogue multimediashows between crazyness and entertainment already have become legendary.

They will play roughly from 9:30 to 00:00 (5euro) and afterwards SOPHISTICATED BOOM BOOM will spin their glitter tunes for free.

Say hello if you show up or let us know what you liked and what you didn’t on! 🙂

The Queen Of Crime is dead.

The last days of our tour were overshadowed by the death of a dear friend: Tine Plesch. Some of you might know as enthusiastic writer for Testcard, Junge Welt, Intro, or from her work for Radio Z.

She died Thursday (4nov) night of a septic shock.

I find it hard to express how much I miss her, and still find it hard to grief because her death came so unforeseen and sudden that I find it hard to accept that she’s gone.

It was as shocking as somehow unreal to hear about her having a cerebral haemorrhage and then about her being brain death before and after playing a show in another town. Thanks to the people who were there to console me. I refused to think about the possibility of her really dying till the end was there because she was a true fighter, restless and idealistic and so contagious – someone so strong can’t die so suddenly.

I learned so much from her and memories of all the wonderful hours we spend talking and drinking keep swirling through my mind. Without her I wouldn’t have found the courage for so many things I do today, and I wish I had a chance to give her back more of the inspiration and power she was for me.

I miss you, Tine, and I thank you and I promise as soon as I’m able to calm my anger and sadness about your death, I will take it as a kick in the ass to make me at least try to somehow

continue what you did so goddamn well so many years.

*.. wishing wells ..*

A good friend of mine, Tine Plesch, gave us a big shock last week by getting sick of a blood poisoning that made her fall into a coma. She still isn’t awake but at least in a stable condition. It makes me feel incredibly helpless and angry and I can’t think of anyting elso to do but hope that thinking of her and deeply wishing her well reaches her somehow.

“razorblades, galangalangalang!” – eve massacre shirts

The wonderful little eve massacre + unmono tour starts this week on Thursday and I’m really looking forward to playing live, especially after having had a great time doing so at the Ladyfest in Stuttgart last week. Of course my cd won’t be ready before the 10th of november – I’m always late so that’s no surprise I guess.

Martin, who did the artwork for it, also had a great idea for T-Shirts and I will carry those as merch. The shirts have a real razor blade sewn on – a razor blade that martin subjected to a lovingly process of rusting and varnishing.

I will also have some coloured 8cm mash up cds with me for those who are still on a slow internet connection. And some old Flamingo Massacres stuff – records and cds.

Here’s a link to a nice new THE PLOT TO BLOW UP THE EIFFEL TOWER song, their next album will be on Revelation and one of the most interesting labels in noisy adventures: 3.1.G.

It will be called ‘The Fascist Brothel’ and this song makes me pretty curious about it.

The Plot will also contribute to 3.1.G.’s next tribute compilation – it goes out to BIRTHDAY PARTY and reading which bands will contribute makes me sooooo looking forward to this:

“Release the Bats”:

Birdland “King Ink”

Cattle Decapitation “Sonny’s Burning”

Chinese Stars “The Plague”

Daughters “Marry Me (lie lie)”

Error “Wild World”

Ex Models “Mutanty in Heaven”

Get Hustle “A Dead Song”

Kid 606 “Blast Off”

Kill Me Tomorrow “Junkyard”

Les Georges Leningrad “Riddle House”

Melt Banana “Faint Heart”

And to completely turn this into a 3.1.G. commercial: Check out this nice and weird EX-MODELS video.

I put up some Nomeansno live pictures of their show in Nürnberg on the 27th and I have to say that they still are one of the catchiest and most charming live bands ever. They conjured up big smiles on everyone’s faces and played an awesome energetic show, joking between the songs, and looking like they really really had lotsa fun themselves.
